Most Important SEO Tips for Higher Rankings

The world of search engine optimization (SEO) is ever-changing. What was considered cutting edge last year may not work at all today. So if you're looking to improve your rankings on Google, Bing, Yahoo!, and the rest of the major search engines, here's what we've learned about the topic over the past nine months.

1. Create Great Content:

There's no question that content is king when it comes to ranking well in search results. If you want your website to get some traction, you need to create quality content. Your content should add value to searchers. It should help them solve their problem(s). And it shouldn't just be written for search — it should be good enough for humans to read.

2. Add Keywords throughout the Body of Your Page:

One of the biggest mistakes people make when they start thinking about optimizing pages for search engines is simply adding keywords throughout the page. You have to understand how search works before diving in and trying to stuff words into the page. Search algorithms look for certain patterns in the text on each page, so stuffing words into spots where they're not supposed to go won't do anything except frustrate you.

3. Optimize Image Alt Text:

Images are great; images are awesome; images are incredibly powerful. But you have to use them right? Don't rely on Google to figure out what those pictures mean. Use alt text for the image. Write something descriptive for the picture that'll explain what it is. Make sure that it appears in search results if someone types in a related keyword phrase.

4. Get Links From High Authority Websites:

To truly rank highly in search results, you need links from high-authority websites. When sites link to yours, it says to Google that this site is valuable and relevant. Getting links from high-authority websites isn't always easy — they're hard to earn — but they're worth fighting for. Check out our article on how to build backlinks to learn more.

5. Include Quality External Resources:

Another way to get links on the web is to ask other sites for permission to link to them. Ask bloggers and news outlets to feature your business on their blogs, and then ask them to link back to you. We talked about how to approach these relationships in our article on guest blogging.

6. Focus On Social Media:

In addition to building links, social media is a terrific way to get exposure for your business and brand. Share interesting articles on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, LinkedIn, and other networks. Also, try to engage with other people online. Answer questions, share thoughts, and respond to comments.

7. Start Talking About Yourself:

Finally, once you've done all of the above, don't forget to talk about yourself. Let people know what you do and why they should care. Talk about your company's mission, goals, products, and services. Be real and human. People will notice.

8. Keyword Research

Keywords are the words that people type into search engines to find what they're looking for. When a user types a keyword into Google, their goal is to get results that have something relevant to what they typed in. In order to achieve this, keywords need to be researched properly. There are hundreds of keyword research tools out there online, but here are some free ones we recommend.

 9. Use More Relevant TLDs (Top Level Domains)

There are several different TLDs (Top-Level Domains), or extensions, that websites use to make themselves easier to find online. Today, many big companies own the domain name or extension. If you want to rank higher than them, adding your business name as a second-level domain name may help. If you add your city or state, even better!

10. Add Your Business Name + City/State

Make sure your website only contains your company name along with the location information. So if you are a New York-based service provider, then add NY at the end of your address. However, if you are a Chicago-based service provider, then either add IL or CH. either way; you should always try to include as much local information as possible.

11. Include Long tail Keywords

Longtail keywords are the keywords people actually use to search for your products or services. While short keywords are great for getting attention, longtail keywords are better for making sales. Try to create content around these longtail keywords to attract searchers.

12. Create Quality Content

People don't just click random links hoping for a good deal or product review; they will go directly to the website where they know what to expect. Write quality articles that provide value for the reader.

13. Improve Website Load Speed

Slow loading pages turn users away completely. A visitor might not even bother to scroll down if the page takes longer than five seconds to fully load. If your site loads slowly, consider investing in a web hosting plan that includes SSD storage.

14. Optimize Images & Videos

Images and videos can greatly improve your rankings. Make sure to optimize images with alt tags, descriptions, and titles. Optimizing videos require tagging the title and description and using video sitemaps. Be careful not to overdo it. Too many images or videos could hurt your ranking.
